 Lee Ellis and Johnny Ellis, are the Father and Son attorneys who comprise Ellis & Ellis. The family's connection to the practice of law dates back before the Civil War when James E. Rains (GG-Grandfather) Graduated from Yale in 1854 and was elected the District Attorney for Nashville, Tennessee in 1858.  He held this position until enlisting as a private in the Confederate Army in 1860, he had attained the Rank of Brigadier General by the time he was killed at Murfreesboro, Tn. in 1862.

Johnny's Great Grandfather from his Mother's side, George Jeffries Stubblefield, opposed the Civil War and moved to Illinois when the conflict began.  However, after Nashville was taken by Union forces, he returned in 1863, and served as District Attorney for Nashville and Davidson County until the end of the Civil War.  He was appointed the United States Attorney Genreal for the District of Tennessee by President Andrew Johnson in 1866.

In 1953 Lee Ellis became a Law Partner with his father-in-law Littell Rust, (Center). Mr. Rust Graduated from Vanderbilt Law School in 1909.  He was involved with many enterprises in downtown Nashville, including McKendree Church, the Nashville Banner, and a scrapy entertainment group known as the Grand Old Opry. 

He was classmates and friends with the founders of the Nashville YMCA Night Law School, and taught there from 1926 to 1958. Albert Gore Senior was among his students.  During the Depression and war years, he sometimes held classes in the Living Room of his home.  Just before he died in 1966, he was instrumental in intergrating the Law School.

Lee Ellis finished Columbia Law School in NY in 1953. He practiced with his father-in-law in the Nashville Bank and Trust Building.  Although his Great-grandfather, the General, had owned 5 slaves in 1860, Lee bacame an advocate for Civil Rights in the 1960s & 70s.  In 1967 he was the founding President of Tennessee's first Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

In the 1980's during Lamar Alexander's term as Governor, Lee served as General Counsel for the Tennessee Department of Conservation, addressing environmental concerns, and State Parks. During it all, he taught "Conflicts of law" at the Nashville School of Law night law school from 1960-1998.
